Shot Put Drills Spin and Glide.
Welcome to Walt Wagners Shot Put Drills Spin and Glide Home Page. We will have a variety of high value drills that you can watch and implement yourself so you can throw for maximum distance. This site is designed for the High School College or Pro Shot Putter in Mind.
We will start at the most basic drills and work our way up to the most advanced. Since Shot Put is not a highly watched sport it often gets neglected at the high school level or even at the small college level. I’m hoping this site will help young coaches who threw competitively or ones who didn’t. I envision this website helping those throwers who don’t even have a dedicated shot put coach. As is often the case at many high schools.
I didn’t even throw the shot put until my junior year of high school . My the end of my senior year I found myself a county and regional champ as well as a 2nd place finish in my state. I through in college for one year and won my conference as an 18 year old freshman. I did love shot put but was playing football in college and needed to dedicate myself to one sport.
Why the quick advancement. A few reasons. It always helps to pick a sport you are built for. A lanky 6’0 145 lb guy is much better suited for the track running a 1600m race than shot put. A 6’3″ 240 lb high schooler is probably better suited for the field doing shot put or discus than running a mile around the track. I was the latter build by final season when I started I was 6’1 190. My lifting was well planned, heavy, intense, powerful and explosive. I lifted to peak at the end of eachseason be that Indoor or Outdoor not caring about the meets leading up to that. I kept a good diet. I went from benching 235 at 16 to 335 at 17. Dead lifting 250 to 405. Clean and Jerking 135 to 225. Squatting 235 to 405. I also started using video tape and had great coaching.
I coached high school football for the first time year. The season is now over and Indoor Track season is upon us. I do not have the time to coach this winter but I am hoping that by making a one stop website that students from that school and others can visit I will help out more throwers in less time.
I believe there are advantage and disadvantages to both techniques of spinning and gliding. My goal is to help give you a centrally located place with all the info that will help you progress both in technique, practice schedule, peak performance, power and winning.
Good luck. Lets Glide or Spin our way to max shot put throws. So lets go with shot put drills, drills, and more drills.
